CLÉRISSEAU, Charles-Louis (1721--1820)
[Antiquités de la France. 1804]
Antiquités de la France, par C. Clerisseau, ... Le texte historique et descriptif, par J.G. Legrand, ... Tome premier.
Paris (Place), de l'imprimerie de Pierre Didot l'ainé,, an XII. = 1804.
xxviii, 139, [3] p., LXIII pl. ; 58.5 cm. (2°)

First published in 1778 (q.v.). The half-title reads 'Antiquités De La France. Tome Premier. Monuments De Nismes.' Although the planned continuation of Clérisseau's 'ouvrage vraiment national' had been abandoned well before the Revolution, he apparently still went on collecting material for it (p. vi). In collaboration with his son-in-law, Jacques-Guillaume Legrand (1743--1808), he published this second edition of the 'Monuments de Nismes' in 1804 with an enlarged text and additional plates. The latter were mainly views dating from forty years earlier which were now engraved for this new edition by Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764--1846) and François-Denis Née. Further volumes in continuance of this edition were promised but, once again, did not appear. The plates in the Soane copy are preceded by a half-title leaf not recorded in the BAL copy. BAL Early printed books, no. 661.
