First edition of the English translation of the original French edition of 1751. A 'Second edition, with additions' based on the revised French edition of 1754, appeared in 1756. BAL, Early printed books, no. 243; ESTC t101272.

Copy Notes Bound (1) with a copy of Description abrégée des antiquités de la ville de Nismes, 1786 (q.v.), the plates to both texts bound together at the end. Extra-illustrated with 21 extraneous engravings from English, French and Latin sources pertaining to Herculaneum, bound in or laid down, some bearing pencil references in an English hand to the Gentleman's Magazine and the Universal Magazine on the versos. Cuttings pertaining to the library at Herculaneum and antiquities dug up there in 1752 are also tipped-in on front free paste-down and endpaper. Bought from T.&W. Boone for 7s., 14 July 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.6).

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine with a Greek key medallion motif, green morocco spine-label gilt-lettered 'Herculaneum / & / Nismes'.
