Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on verso of second front free-endpaper Edited by Beckford / of Fonthill / :2s:6d. This endpaper bears the watermarked date '1808'. The misattribution to Beckford of this entirely straight-faced tabular guide to famous painters is probably due to a false association with his Biographical memoirs of extraordinary painters, a jeu d'esprit published anonymously two years later (q.v.).
