[Architectural antiquities of Normandy. Part 1]
The architectural antiquities of Normandy, represented and illustrated in a series of one hundred etchings, comprising views, elevations, and details of various ancient edifices, by John Sell Cotman, ... From drawings, made by him in the summers of 1817 and 1818. The whole accompanied by historical and descriptive notices.
London (Place), printed for John and Arthur Arch; and J.S. Cotman, Yarmouth,, 1820.
25 [i.e. 24] etch. pl. ; 56.0 cm.

The title and imprint details are taken from the printed part wrapper. At head of title: Part I. £5.5.0. The first part only of the original issue in four parts, publication of which was completed in 1822 with text by Dawson Turner. A printed slip dated 'Yarmouth, Dec. 1819' explains the absence of any descriptive text on the grounds that this was not yet ready in respect of the plates included in this first part. Other drawings by Cotman were also used at this time to illustrate Turner's Account of a tour in Normandy, 1820 (q.v.). This is one of 'Fifty Copies ... printed on Imperial Folio, with proof impressions upon India paper,' published at 5 guineas per part according to a prospectus dated September 1819 (q.v.), also in the Soane Museum. Although the plates are numbered 1 to 25, a large view of the Abbey Church at Caen is counted as 'Pl. 21 & 22'. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 712.

Copy Notes Bound (and probably issued) with blank paper guards protecting the plates. The printed slip explaining the absence of the letterpress is tipped in at the front together with a two-page list of 'Books Published By John and Arthur Arch, 61 Cornhill, London' (q.v.).

Binding Original C19th brown paper wrappers, the front wrapper with a wood-engraved vignette of bas-reliefs lettered 'Normandie' above letterpress-printed title as above, later red roan spine with paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Cotman's Normandy'.

Reference Number 1982
