A CRITICAL EXAMINATION ...
A critical examination of the pictures, now exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Somerset-House; with an introductory dissertation on the principles of criticism. Illustrated by a plate. By an amateur.
London: printed for Messrs. Jordan and Maxwell, and R. Spencer, 1807.
79, [1] p., [1] pl. ; 22.7 cm. (8°)

The author has not been identified. The final page advertises as 'Just Published, And Sold By Jordan And Maxwell, ... A Critical Catalogue Of The Pictures Now Exhibiting In The British Institution, ... By John Herman Knoop' with a note stating that 'The severity of the Criticisms in this piece, produced a Duel between the Author and an eminent Portrait Painter, in which the former was severely wounded. - See the Morning Chronicle for May 18th.' The author of the present critique, by contrast, is generally philosophical rather than satirical in tone, and certainly much more interested in architecture than painting. No other copies have been traced.

Copy Notes Deckle edges, previously stitched. Bound in a volume of pamphlets on the arts.

Binding C19th blue paper boards, brown paper spine lettered in ink 'Miscel-/Laneous// Landseer/ Letters// Haydon/ on the/ Elgin/ Marbles/ &c./ &c./ E'. Later numbered '89' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
