The advertisement is signed 'Frances Marianne Jansen' i.e. Cumberland's daughter. Soane subscribed for two copies (see subscribers' list in vol. I, p. viii), as did the late prime minister, Spencer Perceval. In the first volume pages 33--40 are signed G4 and pages 41--48 are signed F4. Cumberland was secretary to the Board of Trade and Plantations in 1775, but is better known as a playwright.
