First edition 1772--74. Each part with separate title-leaf, pt. 4 imprint names as agent 'Didot fils = Jombert jeune'. According to the unsigned 'Avis De L'Éditeur.' some of the first edition's 360 plates were dropped for 'cette seconde édition plus économique & sans luxe typographique', but others were added to bring the total back to 'encore environ 356 planches.' (pt. 1, p. [iii]). Including the frontispiece, this copy contains 354 plates. (The text calls for pl. 1--98 in pt. 1; pl. 1--95 in pt. 2; pl. 1--98 in pt. 3; and pl. 1--54 in pt. 4. However, only the plates in pt. 2 are numbered to match the text, nearly all of the other plates being numbered irregularly in 'cahiers' of twelve plates or less. One plate in pt. 1 ('4e. Cer. Pl. V.'), one in pt. 3 ('16e. Cer. pl. XII.'), and six plates numbered 55--60 in pt. 4, are not called for by the text.)

Copy Notes Volume I second front free-endpaper inscribed in ink 1:16:0/ John Soane/ 1807. Bookseller's price in pencil on first front free-endpaper 4 vol in 2. 2.10.0.

Binding C18th stained 'catspaw' calf, blind-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spines, red above green morocco spine-labels, green silk bookmarks. Bound as two volumes.
