[Premier tome de l'architecture. 1576]
L'architecture de Philibert de L'orme cõseillier & aumofnier ordinarie du Roy, & abbé de S. Serge lez Angiers
A Paris (Place), chez Hierosme de Marnef, & Guillaume Cavellat,, 1576.
[10], 112, [112]-113, [3], 116--264, [264]-265, [1], 266-283, [1] leaves : wdcut illus. ; 36.5 cm. (2°)

Sometimes referred to as the second edition (cf. Millard I, p. 313), this is in fact the third issue of the first edition, first published in 1567 under the title Le premier tome de l'architecture. The second issue appeared in the following year (both Paris: Morel) and a fourth issue in 1603 (Paris: Guillaume Auvray). A second edition appeared in 1626 (q.v.), with the text reset and modified and a shorter edition of de L'Orme's first publication, Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir (first ed.: Paris 1561) included as books X and XI. The planned second volume was never written. Despite this, de L'Orme's treatise is one of the most important architecture treatises of the Renaissance. Its nine books provide a synthesis of architectural theory and practice. The title-leaf of the present issue is printed within a woodcut border, with a woodcut portrait (not present in the first or second issues) on the verso; ê6 is a blank. Leaves x1, x3, X1, Bbb1 and Bbb2 are bifolia printed with double-page woodcuts on the inner forme, signed on the second of the two leaves (recto or verso). See BAL, Early printed works, no. 1955 for a full description of the second issue of 1568 which varies in some small particulars including a privilege dated 29 November 1567 on the verso of the title-page and two final leaves Eee5-6. See also Millard I, pp. 310-312.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt tooled spine with floral motifs, red morocco spine-label.
