Belfast Institution. Belfast, 9th May, 1823. The following extract from the Belfast News-Letter of the 9th May, 1823, is respectfully submitted to your consideration by an Inhabitant of this Town, to show what is actually done in the Belfast Institution, even with its present limited and almost exhausted resources, and that it is deserving of that Parliamentary support which it formerly received, and which it still hopes to obtain, as essentially connected with the intellectual, moral and religious interests of the North of Ireland: - ...

Belfast Institution. Belfast, 9th May, 1823. The following extract from the Belfast News-Letter of the 9th May, 1823, is respectfully submitted to your consideration by an Inhabitant of this Town, to show what is actually done in the Belfast Institution, even with its present limited and almost exhausted resources, and that it is deserving of that Parliamentary support which it formerly received, and which it still hopes to obtain, as essentially connected with the intellectual, moral and religious interests of the North of Ireland: - ...

Anonymous. Imprint from colophon. The extract quotes in extenso from the address of the Moderator of the General Synod of Ulster, the Revd. John Mitchel and the reply of the President of the Faculty, the Revd. Dr. Hugh Hanna. The Royal Belfast Academical Institution had been formally opened in 1814. Its history dates from an application to the Marquis of Donegall in 1807 and a meeting held on August 1st, 1807 to draw up plans for the regulation of the new Institution. John Soane was invited to draw up plans for the building in 1809 for which he declined payment and the foundation stone for a modified version of his plans was laid in 1810. (See D. Stroud, Sir John Soane, architect, London 1984, p. 270.) The Soane Museum has 43 drawings relating to this project (Drawer 71/5/1--41 & 43; Vol. 90/5); for the correspondence relating to it, see Priv. Corr. V.F.1--37.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on p. [4] with the date 1823 / Belfast / Institution / Ireland. Folded and bound (3) in a collection of pamphlets and manuscripts, including other material relating to the Institution.
Binding C19th half dark green roan, blind double-ruled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine direct-lettered in gilt 'Brooksean Museum &c', later numbered '47' in a series of pamphlet volumes. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 2s. 6d. on 22 December 1830. (Archive 7/15/8).
