Volume I only of the first English edition of Desgodetz's influential Édifices antiques de Rome, first published in 1682 (3 copies, q.v.). With a dedication to George III who comissioned the work in 1762. French and English text on facing pages, owing to which the pagination sequence starts on a verso, with additional French title-page reading Les edifices antiques de Rome; .... George Marshall translated the text and engraved the plates, which are close copies of the plates of the original edition reduced in size. Although he described himself as an architect, nothing is known of his work. The second volume was published after Marshall's death by I. and J. Taylor in 1795, at wich time the remaining sheets of the first volume were reissued with a new title-page. BAL, Early printed books, no. 860; Harris and Savage, 196 and pp. 180-182; ESTC t21876.
