'M. D***' = A.N. Dezallier d'Argenville. This popular guide was first published in 1749. The added title-plate is engraved in colour (red and black) by J. Robert. With two leaves of 'Corrections & Additions' and 'Corrections pour la seconde Edition' after p. 476 (sig. V11,12), and a final leaf of bookseller's advertisements for other works by the same author. Soane also owned a copy of the 'Cinquieme Édition', 1770 (q.v.).
Copy Notes Extensively annotated in ink with marginal notes in English principally on the authorship, condition and quality of paintings. These notes were evidently made by a previous owner before the book was trimmed and bound and acquired by Soane.
Binding C18th half calf, gilt-tooled spine, marbled-paper boards.
