Book I first appeared in 1593; Book II in 1594. The collected edition of Dietterlin's works is much enlarged and was published in German, in Latin and with parallel texts in Latin and French (q.v.). The division in five parts is modelled on Vitruvius but Dietterlin's plates are best known for their ornamental juxtaposition of classical mythology, biblical scenes and grotesques with late gothic motifs. The Soane copy can be identified as the second issue of the first collected edition of 1598 (see BAL 881). It has a dedication to Daniel Soriau dated 1598. The leaves of letterpress and plates, including the etched divisional title-pages to Books II--V dated 1598, are numbered consecutively. The imprint of the general title-page in red and black has the words 'Hubrecht vnd' before Balthasar Caymox crossed out in ink. Plate 179 misnumbered '178' and corrected by the publisher in ink. BAL, Early printed books, no. 881; Fowler 105.
