With parallel text in French. The plates were engraved from drawings made during tours in Greece in 1801, 1805, and 1806, and were intended by the author to supplement the two volumes of his Classical and topographical tour published in 1819 (q.v.). The original intention was to publish 60 views, but owing to the cost of hand-colouring and the pressure of time, the number was halved. The museum has 3 voumes of drawings for the plates: volume 1 contains finished drawings; volumes 2 and 3 sketches from which they were made, 1809-1831. See SM, Concise Catalogue of Drawings, vol. 22-24. In this copy the plates are 'before letters' proofs printed on heavy paper watermarked 'J WHATMAN/ TURKEY MILL/1828' (also one plate with watermark date '1829'), and the preliminary 'List Of The Plates' has a similar watermark dated '1825'. Binding C19th maroon straight-grained morocco, gilt-tooled floret borders, palmette surrounds in blind, quintuple-ruled centre panels with scrolled arabesque corner-pieces in gilt, spine gilt-tooled with further arabesques and direct lettered in gilt 'Dodwell's / Views / In / Greece', gilt edges, light blue endpapers.
