Edited by Tobias Smollett (see ODNB), who was engaged by the author's brother to prepare the letters, written between 1744 and 1750, for publication. Alexander Drummond was British consul at Aleppo between 1754 and 1756. The allegorical frontispiece, which includes a medallion portrait of the author, is signed as engraved by 'J.S.M.', i.e. Johann Sebastian Müller (fl. ca. 1715--1790). Müller (or Miller) was also responsible for engraving most of the plates. Includes (pp. 295--311) a 'Thermometer table at Larnica in Cyprus [and at Aleppo], from July 1, 1745, to June 30., 1747.' Copy Notes Bought for 7s. from Thomas Boone on 11 July 1806 (Spiers Box). With the name of a previous owner, Susna Barclay, inscribed in ink on the verso of the frontispiece. Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper Curious large plates/ & Maps/ =7s/6d.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, blind roll-tool panels, gilt double-rule borders, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label.
