'Religieux de la Compagnie de Jesvs' = Jean Dubreuil. The title-leaf is a cancel, this being the second issue of the second edition of pt. 1 of Dubreuil's treatise. The first edition is dated 1642 (Fowler 108; Berlin Kat. 4714). A Seconde partie de la Perspective pratique appeared in 1647, a Troisiesme et dernière in 1649, and the second edition of pt. 1 was first published by François Langlois's widow in 1651. Where present, the numbering of leaves has been taken from rectos, and matches the number of full-page illustrations (i.e. 172). It is repeated on each facing verso, but the introductions to each of the seven treatises are unnumbered. Gathering L was imposed incorrectly, causing 'Pratique XXVI (--XXIX)' of 'Traité II' to appear in the wrong order. See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 921 (describing the first edition).

Copy Notes Engraved bookplate (late C18th/early C19th?) of 'Morough: O'Bryen' (i.e. Murrough O'Brien) with arm and sword crest and Gaelic motto. Occasional early French MS. notes in margins. Front paste-down inscribed in ink with shelfmark(?) 2-6.

Binding C17th calf, gilt-tooled lozenge and corner-piece spine compartments, gilt-lettered spine title 'Perspec / Pratiq'.

Reference Number 2130

Additional Names Religieux de la Compagnie de Jesus; O'Brien, Murrough, 5th Earl of Inchiquin and 1st Marquess of Thomond (1726--1808)
