The original French edition was published anonymously, Paris, 1719. This is one of a number of books translated from the French by the miscellaneous writer, Thomas Nugent (1700?--1772). The final page of vols. I-II respectively contain lists of books 'just published by' and 'printed for' J. Nourse; that of vol. III contains errata. ESTC n3253.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 7s. 6d. on 3 October 1808. (Spiers Box). Volume I inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane, and in pencil 3 vols.: 7.6. Volume II inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper J Wa[rton?], possibly the poet and literary critic Joseph Warton (1722--1800). All three volumes with marginal marks of emphasis in pencil and in ink; vols. I and II additionally have notes with page references inscribed in ink on the rear free-endpaper, extending in vol. II to the rear pastedown.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt thick-thin double-rule spine, red spine-labels.
