Anonymous. The dedication signed and dated 'L. Dutens. A Londres, ce 15 Janvier 1766'. Dutens, a diplomat and man of letters, was a Huguenot refugee. In 1763 he was presented to the living of Elsdon, Northumberland, and was later appointed historiographer to George III and elected F.R.S., sponsored by M. Maty and C. Solander among others. Soane's library also contains a copy of the 1769 English translation of this work (q.v.), as well as the third edition of 1796 (q.v.).
Copy Notes Volume I inscribed in ink on front paste-down endpaper 0/4/0 Lumley; bought from Edward Lumley for 4s. on 27 May 1829. (Priv. Corr. XVI E 6:26). Volume I inscribed in ink on front paste-down endpaper and front free-endpaper Charles Bathurst. Inscribed on half-title to vol. I and on title-page to vol. II M. Maty, i.e. the Dutch Huguenot physician Matthew Maty (1718--1786) who founded the Journal Britannique in 1750 and became under-librarian at the British Museum in 1753 and principal librarian in 1772. Cropped inscription on title-page (illegible).
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt roll-tooled spine, red spine-labels.
