House of Commons 161. The Report is signed by Benjamin West. The House of Commons, having been petitioned by the Earl of Elgin on 15 February 1816 to purchase his collection of marbles for the nation, appointed a Select Committee to enquire into the expediency of the purchase. Their conclusion was that the collection should be bought for £35,000, which Elgin had to accept though it was much less than he wanted. Elgin's Memorandum on the subject was published in 1811 (q.v.) and again in 1815 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half dark brown calf, gilt double-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards.
