The author's name is given in the Privilege du Roy and the printer's in a colophon. The text is printed in engraved borders, with engraved head and tail pieces and initials. The frontispiece depicting Louis XIV ordering the building of the Invalides also appears in Le Jeune de Boulencourt's Description generale de l'Hostel Royal des Invalides, 1683 (q.v.).

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on verso of first front free-endpaper £1 -15. 0 with a bookseller's cipher. Inscribed in ink on second front free-endpaper Ex Libris Dominici Serres Pictoris/ Londini anno Dni. 1784, i.e. Dominic Serres RA, marine painter (1722--1793).

Binding C18th red morocco, gilt triple-rule borders, gilt-tooled arms of Louis XIV on upper and lower covers, gilt-tooled spine with brown morocco spine-label. Upper cover lettered in ink '1 Day 263' (possibly referring to a sale lot).
