First edition of this popular biographical history which was reprinted many times in Paris, London and Amsterdam. Soane took notes from the Recueil historique in December 1812 (Soane Case 163/1), October 1814 (Archive MBiii/2/14) while preparing lecture 12, and August-September 1818 (Soane Case 179/1). (See Watkin, Soane, p. 700, 704 and 727.) The 1706 Amsterdam edition is also in the Soane Museum (q.v.) and the work is also contained in vol. V of the collected works of André Félibien (1619--1695) and Jean François, his son and successor as Historiographe Royal, titled Entretiens sur les vies et sur les ouvrages des plus excellens peintres anciens et modernes, 6 vols, Trevoux, 1725 (q.v.).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on first front free-endpaper Sir Robt: Smyth Bart:, crossed out in ink, and on second front free-endpaper 0/10/6/ John Soane. Title-page inscribed in ink J. F. Felibien des Avaux. The Library of Sir Robert Smyth was sold at auction in 1809. See A catalogue of the entire and very valuable library of the late Sir Robert Smythe, Bart. ... : which will be sold by auction, by Leigh and S. Sotheby ... on Monday, April 10, 1809, and five following days, 1809. With occasional translation notes inscribed in ink in the margins, and the addition of the reference Adrian 108 to the index.

Binding C18th mottled calf, gilt double-rule borders, gilt tooled spine, gilt edges.
