Second edition; the first was printed in Vienna in 1721, and that date appears on the engraved dedication in this edition. Only the French letterpress was reprinted in the present edition. This was the first work to depict non-European buildings on the same scale as classical remains (books I--III). Book IV shows the author's own buildings, and book V contains 13 plates depicting vases. Subsequent editions were printed from the same plates after the expiry of the privilege period, including an edition with translated letterpress for the English market (Leipzig 1730; reissued London 1737, q.v.). Copy Notes Copy 2: 39.4 cm. The [50] pages of letterpress text are folded and the plates mounted on stubs as double-page plates, or folded. Inscribed in ink on front paste-down Stephn. Riou/ Londinis/ Vienna Austriae./ 1754/; in pencil on front free-endpaper d/e and P P. With a loosely inserted, ruled pen and ink and pencil drawing of a pyramid inscribed 759 feet square/ 441 feet perpendicular Height/ ½ inch Scale = 100 feet. Watermark: English royal coat of arms, the upper part cut, see E. Heawood, Watermarks (Hilversum [1950]), nos. 441 or 445. Book IV, plate I (plan of the Imperial bath in the Turkish style not far from Bude in Hungary) inscribed in pencil with a scale in English feet.

Binding Copy 1: C19th half diced russia, gilt thick-ruled borders, gilt roll-tooled and thick-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards and edges.
Copy 2: C18th half pink-stained tawed sheep, marbled-paper boards. Dutch retail binding.
