Translation of Fréart's Parallèle de l'architecture antique avec la moderne, first published 1650 (1702 ed., q.v.). First edition of Evelyn's translation, 1664; other editions 1680, 1707 (q.v.), 1733 (q.v.). Evelyn's 'An Account Of Architects' has separate title-page, pagination and register. This is the only traced copy of the first issue of the third edition; a second issue (q.v.) has the title-page dated 1723 and a different title-page vignette (75 x 112 mm.). See BAL, Early printed books, no. 1136. Title-page printed in red and black. The variant also has. Not in ESTC. Harris and Savage 234.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on title page John Soane. A marginal note in ink about a calculation in the text (not in Soane's hand) on p. 51 and other marginal marks of emphasis in ink.

Binding C19th red straight-grain morocco, covers, spine and turn-ins tooled in gilt and blind, blue silk bookmark, gilt edges.
