First published in parts, 1830--31. The author of the text is not known. The title given above is steel-engraved. The second title-plate is for 'South Wales Illustrated, In A Series Of Views ...,' which could be bound separately or, as in this case, together with North Wales. The Soane copy has the plates printed on India paper and the lists of views, sig. 3C2, are cancels (see note to the binder on leaf 3C2v). BAL, Early printed books, no. 1179.

Copy Notes A series of six receipts in Soane's archive for eight numbers of 'Wales'/'Views in Wales' at 2s. each, dated between 24 December 1830 and 12 July 1831, may refer to the purchase of the present work. Five of the receipts have the printed letterhead of '... G. Virtue, ... 26, Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row' and are signed by Geo Virtue or JP Shuffrey; the remaining one, for the fourth number on 18 January, is on plain paper and signed J Swigg. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16--21).

Binding Mid-19th-century half calf, blind-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine, black spine-label. Bound uniformly with Thomas Allom's Westmorland, Cumberland, &c. (q.v.), and Devonshire & Cornwall (q.v.), both of which were published by Fisher and Jackson, and with Winkle's architectural and picturesque illustrations (q.v.).
