GILPIN, William (1724--1804)
Observations on the western parts of England, relative chiefly to picturesque beauty. To which are added, a few remarks on the picturesque beauties of the Isle of Wight. By William Gilpin, M.A. ...
London (Place), printed for T. Cadell jun. and W. Davies,, 1798.
xvi, 359, [1] p., [18] aquatint pl. ; 21.6 cm. (8º)

Between 1782 and 1809 eight volumes of Gilpin's Observations on picturesque scenery in various parts of England and Scotland were published. This is the sixth publication and the only one in Soane's library. The same setting of type was also printed with a 4° imposition. The final page advertises the current list of Gilpin's works sold by Cadell and Davies. Soane and Gilpin were elected Associates of the Royal Academy on the same day, 2 November 1795. ESTC t41858.

Copy Notes Soane was evidently less interested in Gilpin's romantic descriptions than the theoretical analyses of Uvedale Price and Richard Payne Knight. Margins inscribed in pencil in several places with notes of emphasis, query or disagreement, probably not by Soane, including the comment erroneous alongside passage on p. 96 beginning "Nature's transitions are generally gradual ...".

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt-tooled spine with floral motif, black spine-label, small round red morocco spine-label in gilt border lettered in gilt 'c'.
