GREGSON, Joseph (fl. 1799--1813)
Pocket edition. A classical list of the most fashionable furniture: and considerations necessary for the interior elegance, comfort, and safety of a house, from the plain and neat to the most elegant and superb, alphabetically arranged, with examples of its utility in practice. By Joseph Gregson, interior surveyor.
London (Place), sold by R. Ackerman; T. Gardiner; Sherwood, Neely and Jones; and J. Taylor, (Architectural Library). Printed by Moore & Son,, 1812.
[2], 74 p. ; 16.7 cm. (8°)

The 'List' is a mock dictionary of the goods and services that Gregson, a surveyor 'late of Liverpool', could offer the fashion-conscious yet prudent London householder. An 'Appendix' concerning the safety of houses (recommending types of fire insurance cover, air traps for house drains, &c.) includes an open letter by Matthew Gregson (a Liverpool cabinetmaker and presumably related to the author) on the benefits of teaching drawing and design in charity schools. This is dated from 'St. Anne Street, Liverpool, March, 1813.' which suggests Gregson's book appeared somewhat later than is stated on the title-page.

Copy Notes With a presentation inscription to Soane from the author on the half-title, and an accompanying letter dated 29 October 1813 tipped in, seeking his patronage. Bound (8) in a collection of pamphlets.

Binding Later C19th green pebble-grained binder's cloth cloth, gilt-lettered spine reading 'Societies / Pamphlets'. The spine later numbered 'A' in a series of pamphlet volumes.

Reference Number 2382
