The first edition of this popular primer appeared in 1717. The title-page verso contains an advertisement for another of the author's books and for a book by Dr John Harris, whose recommendation is on the title-page. The final [2] pages contain a list of 'Books printed for the Proprietors of this Work.' ESTC t109458.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper J. Soane/ 1769 (the 'e' added later), also a small sketch for A Cellar 17 feet long/ 15 feet broad and several arithmetical calculations and continuing on verso, with references to Charles Hutton's Treatise on Mensuration, 1770, which is not in Soane's library. A few calculations in ink in text. On the title-page, the last three letters of 'Complete' underlined and corrected in ink to --eat.
