The last plate, facing page 332, is a medallion portrait of Romney by the sculptor, Thomas Alfonso Hayley (1780--1800), the natural son of the poet and author, William Hayley. Hayley, a poet, made a name for himself as a biographer with his successful three-volume work The life, and posthumous writings, of William Cowper, Esq. (1803--4); the present work was less well received.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting 3 plates opposite pages 121, 172, 304. Bought from A. Maxwell for £2, 23 August 1810. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.2.7). With many passages underlined in pencil by Soane and his marginal comments, usually noting a relationship between painting and architecture, on pages 149, 196 apply this to Archre. which requires a domestic Academy more than paintg, 227 Romney was not a member of the R.A., 293, 305, 311, 317, 323 Read this you idle & dissipated blockhead, and 329.

Binding C19th diced calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt-ruled spine, maroon spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 6s. 6d., 5 September 1829. (Archive 7/10/19).
