Howard's The state of the prisons was first published in 1777 (2nd ed. 1780, q.v.); this is the first edition of the Appendix, which was reprinted in 1784 and later incorporated into the main text. The plates are numbered 3--22 top right, with numbers 1, 2, 16 and 20 omitted. Plate 22, the plan of Plymouth Hospital, is not included in the list of plates for the binder. Plates 3, 11--15 and 18 are printed from the same coppers as those which had been used (in an unnumbered state) for the main work. ESTC t152722.
