The author (not to be confused with the draughtsman, John Ireland who died c. 1797) owned most of Hogarth's manuscripts which he apparently rewrote with his own additions and corrections for the third volume, A supplement to Hogarth illustrated, 1798 (q.v.). See R. Paulson, Hogarth: his life, art, and times (New Haven & London 1971), I, xv--xvi. ESTC t2314.

Copy Notes Imperfect; volume I wanting 1 plate at p. xciv. Volume II inscribed in pencil with marginal notes by Joseph Bonomi, Jr. (1797--1876), curator of the Soane Museum from 1861.

Binding C19th tree calf, elaborate Greek key gilt roll-tool borders, gilt-tooled spines with Greek key and rosettes, red morocco spine-labels. Volume I with the printed pink binder's ticket of C. Kalthoeber, London affixed to front free-endpaper.
