[Portes cochères. 1810. Scherff issue]
Scherff,, 1810.
8, 36 p., engr. frontis., 50 [i.e. 49] pl. ; 34.6 cm. (4°)

Parallel title and text in English and German. This is the first part of what was intended to be a four part work forming a single volume. The second part was to deal with building elevations, the third with joinery and the fourth with smith's work. The title-page was evidently printed for the complete work, but only the first part was published. This copy has, additionally, the abbreviated title-page to the separate edition of Portes cochères (q.v.), omitting Krafft's name and with the imprint of Bance l'aíné, Marchand d'Estampes, who seems to have taken over from Scherff in 1810 but not cancelled the original title-page in all copies, or possibly sold copies simultaneously. Plates 45--46 are a single folding plate. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1695.

Copy Notes One of Soane's three copies of this work was bought at Christie's sale, 16--17 February 1815, lot 49 (with five other works; see marked-up sale catalogue in Christie's archive) for £1 16s. Another may be represented by the copy of 'Gates & house doors in Paris 1 vol 4to Stitchd' bought from Boydell & Co. for £2 on 14 July 1815. (Spiers Box). Another copy of 'Gates and Doors of Patris Qto' was bought from T. & W. Boone for 10s. on 14 May 1823. This is probably to be identified with one of the copies of the Bance issue which was rebound at the time of purchase. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.5).

Binding Contemporary C19th grey paper boards, paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Krafft/ [illegibly faded]'.

Reference Number 2556
