KRAFFT, Jean Charles (1764--1838)
[Portes cochères. 1810. Bance issue]
Portes cochères et portes d'entrée de Paris. ...
Paris (Place), chez Bance l'aíné, marchand d'estampes,, 1810.
[2], 36 p., engr. frontis., 50 [i.e. 49] pl. ; 30.0 cm. (4°)

Parallel title and text in English and German. Another copy of Portes cochères in the Soane Museum (q.v.) is identical to that described in BAL, Early printed books, no. 1695 in having a second, extended title-page bearing the imprint of J.L. Scherff in addition to the abbreviated one transcribed above. Bance l'aíné (who later republished the work in 1738) seems to have taken over from Scherff in 1810 but not cancelled the original title-page in all copies, or possibly sold copies simultaneously. Both copies of this edition in the Soane Museum additionally lack the preface (prelim. pp. [3]--8) present in the Scherff copy. Plates 45--46 are a single folding plate.

Copy Notes One of Soane's three copies of this work was bought at Christie's sale, 16--17 February 1815, lot 49 (with five other works; see marked-up sale catalogue in Christie's archive) for £1 16s. Another may be represented by the copy of 'Gates & house doors in Paris 1 vol 4to Stitchd' bought from Boydell & Co. for £2 on 14 July 1815. (Spiers Box). Another copy of 'Gates and Doors of Patris Qto' was bought from T. & W. Boone for 10s. on 14 May 1823 and bound at the time of purchase in 'Royal Quarto Calf Extra' for 13s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.5).
Copy 1: Probably the copy bought from Boone.
Copy 2: 25.5 cm. (oblong 4°).

Binding Copy 1: C19th 'catspaw' mottled calf, gilt triple rule borders, gilt thick-thin double-ruled spine, black morocco spine-label. Probably the copy bound by T. & W. Boone, 14 May 1823 for 13s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.5).
Copy 2: C19th diced calf, gilt and blind roll tool borders, gilt thick-thin double-ruled spine, black morocco spine-label.
