First published in 1778. 'The Author of The Antiquities of Furness' = Thomas West. This was the standard guide for the Lakes tour, which reached its seventh edition by the end of the eighteenth century and made a significant contribution to the popularisation of the region. The author, born Thomas Daniel, was a Scottish Catholic antiquary and writer. The title with the monogram of the publisher, W. Pennington of Kendal. Bookseller's advertisements on verso of final leaf. Printed on blue paper. ESTC t111548.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting 19 plates (i.e. all but the plate of 'Grasmere', bound as frontispiece). Purchased for 4s. 6d. from John Maynard on 9 August 1804. (Jnl 5, p.7). Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane/ 1804.

Binding Early C19th half calf, gilt-tooled spine, marbled-paper boards.
