LAUGIER, Marc-Antoine (1713--1769)
[Essai sur l'architecture. 1755]
xliv, [4], 316, [4] p., engr. frontis., 8 fold. pl. ; 19.1 cm. (8º)

To illustrate and better explain his theory that the fundamental principles of architecture should be rationally derived from its natural origins in man's first dwelling, Laugier added to this revised edition of his controversial Essai, 1st ed., Paris 1753 (q.v.) a glossary with eight explanatory plates and an allegorical frontispiece drawn and etched by Charles Eisen (1720--1778). The latter depicts Architecture turning her back on the broken remains of the classical orders and pointing instead at a wall- and window-less structure constructed of living trees. The constituent elements of this 'primitive hut' - free-standing columns resting directly on the ground, an entablature denoting a flat ceiling, and the angle of a sloping roof a triangular pediment - remained in Laugier's view essential touchstones of true beauty in architecture. With a list of errata on prelim. page [4] and a final page of bookseller's advertisements. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1774; Hooked on Books 2.3.
