First edition. The plates are often attributed to Jean Marot, but A. Mauban attributes them to Melchior Tavernier. (See Mauban, Jean Marot, architecte et graveur parisien, Paris 1944, p. 49). Le Muet's treatise was important as a reference book and often reprinted, forming the model for many later books on domestic buildings (see Millard I, p. 261). BAL, Early printed books, no. 1819.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting pages 97--100 (i.e. the gathering I2). Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper Mr de la Faye in Downing street.
Binding C17th limp vellum, the spine inscribed in ink 'La Mu/ -ete./ de bi[?]/ bâtir'. Also inscribed at head of spine 'Ta/ [?]' on traces of a paper label.
