"R.H." = Richard Haydocke. Imprint from colophon. Translation of Trattato dell'arte de la pittura, scultura, et architettura by the Milanese painter and writer Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo, first published in 1584; for the background to Lomazzo's treatise see notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 3986. Only books I--V were published by Haydocke. Books VI and VII are listed in the "Table of Chapters" and were intended to follow but never did. This was the first book on the arts to be translated into English. Dedicated to Thomas Bodley, 24 August 1598. ESTC s111822; Madan I, p. 46.

Copy Notes 'Lematius's Arte of Painting - [Lot] 79' bought from W. Boone for 13s. on 13 February 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.8). Inscribed in ink on t.-pl. Tho: Mede (?), on front free-endpaper 2-2-0; with a few marginal notes and markings in pencil.

Binding C19th sprinkled calf, blind roll-tooled and thick-thin gilt-ruled borders, gilt-dotted and blind-tooled spine, Greek key gilt-tooled turn-ins.
