Half-sheet, folded, verso of first leaf and conjugate leaf blank. Drop-head title. Issued at Calais on 18 July 1814 to John Jackson Cuff, with visas to travel to Paris and Dieppe. Cuff was lessee of 62 Great Queen Street, at this date a tenant of Freemasons' Hall and manager of the Freemasons' Tavern. He was perhaps taking the opportunity to travel in post-war France following the acquisition of his premises by the Freemasons' Hall at auction by John Robins (sale catalogue June 23, 1814, q.v.) having confirmed in a letter to Soane dated 8 July, 1814 that he will be ready to receive the / workmen at the end of this month. (Priv. Corr. X.A.36).
Copy Notes Endorsed by the authorities in Dieppe and Paris. Perhaps presented to Soane by J.J. Cuff following his return from travel in France, as a souvenir. Bound (5) in a collection of pamphlets.
Binding Later C19th marbled-paper boards, maroon grained binder's cloth spine, direct-lettered in gilt 'Pamphlets'. Numbered '64' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
