Originally published in 1739 as The history of London, from its foundation by the Romans (q.v.). The present, much expanded edition began to appear in numbers on 29 December 1753. Adams, BAL and ESTC t100031 record a variant title-page to vol. I reading: The History of London from its foundation to the present time ... [&c.]. An earlier version of this variant title-page with the imprint 'Printed for R. Baldwin, at the Rose, in Pater-noster-Row' dated 1754 (not noted by Adams, BAL or ESTC) is also present in the Soane copy (and included in the collation given above). It was however probably intended to be cancelled by the 1756 title-page as above, which is the same in both volumes of the Soane copy. The final leaf of vol. II containing 'Directions to the Bookbinder For Placing the Copper-Plates' is not recorded in ESTC, Adams or BAL. See B. Adams, London illustrated (London 1983), no. 38, pp. 96--102; BAL, Early printed books, no. 2007. ESTC n7571.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting pl. [40] at p. 1031 and pl. [100] at p. 1348.
