Anonymous. By Thomas Maurice. First published 1793--1800, with another edition 1794--1800, this is a polemical work "defending the Pentateuch from the attacks of sceptical French mythographers such as Baillie, Volney, and Dupuis, who sought to interpret religious myths, whether Hindu or Christian, as astronomical and natural allegories" (ODNB). Volume VI was originally intended to be the last in the series, however, for various reasons Maurice was unable to produce it and therefore decided to divide it into two parts, the first part containing a dissertation on the Indian origin of the Druids (including plates depicting Stonehenge), the second part being volume VII. The present set consists of vols I, II, IV and VII with title-pages dated 1800. and vols III and V with title-pages dated 1801. Volume VI however is from the first edition, with the title-page dated 1796. ESTC n31584 (vols I--II), n31589 (vol. IV), t88522 (vol. VI), t88520 (vol. VII).

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-titles to volumes I--III and VI--VII. Volumes IV--V may also lack half-titles not recorded in ESTC. Volumes II and III inscribed in ink by Soane on rear paste-downs and rear free endpapers with page references, including references to Elephanta and Salsette, and with marginalia and underlinings in pencil in the text, evidently while preparing his lecture notes. (See Soane Case 164/1.)
