The general title-page is without an imprint, date or place of publication. It serves to combine three closely related works by Mayer which were also available separately, viz.: Views in Egypt, from the original drawings in the possession of Sir Robert Ainslie ... ; Views in Palestine ... ; and Views in the Ottoman Empire, chiefly in Caramania ... . Each of these retain specific title-pages with imprints naming Robert Bowyer as publisher and Thomas Bensley as printer. Those of the first two are dated 1804, that of the third 1803. Thomas Milton is credited as the engraver of the plates on the title-page to Views in Egypt ...; however, Abbey suggests that the Palestine and Ottoman Empire plates (which are unsigned by the engraver) may have been engraved by William Watts (Abbey, Travel, vol. II, p. 322). The Views in Palestine ... and Views in the Ottoman Empire have parallel French titles (the latter on a separate title-leaf) and text. The plates throughout are hand-coloured aquatints signed 'L. Mayer delt.'. According to Abbey, Bowyer subsequently added to this combination Mayer's Views in the Ottoman dominions, 1810; however Soane's copy of this later work was purchased separately (q.v.). For details of the plates see J.R. Abbey, Travel in aquatint and lithography 1770--1860: a bibliographical catalogue (London 1956--57), vol. II, no. 369. Hooked on Books 3.2.
