MAYER, Luigi (ca. 1755--1803)
Views in the Ottoman dominions, in Europe in Asia, and some of the Mediterranean islands, from the original drawings taken for Sir Robert Ainslie, by Luigi Mayer, ... With descriptions historical and illustrative.
London (Place), printed by T. Bensley, for R. Bowyer,, 1810.
[6], 32, [140] p., [71] hand-col. aquatint pl. (1 fold.) ; 46.0 cm. (2º)

The paginated English text consists of a general account of Turkey in Europe and Asia. In addition there is a single, unnumbered page of descriptive text in French and English, printed on rectos only, accompanying each plate (except for pl. 55, the description of which is included with the text for pl. 54) The plates, which are all unnumbered, bear the imprint 'Published by R. Bowyer, 80 Pall Mall. 1809' (1810 from pl. [37] onwards). Unsigned by any engraver, they were almost certainly the work of William Watts (1752--1851), a pupil of Paul Sandby, who had engraved and published most of them in 1801 and 1806. Bowyer seems to have taken over Watts's earlier work and published it, together with additions that had not appeared in his own publications, as the final volume of his series Views in ... the Ottoman Empire, 1804 (q.v.). For details of the plates see J.R. Abbey, Travels in aquatint and lithography 1770--1860 (London 1956--57), vol. II, no. 371; and R.V. Tooley, English books with coloured plates 1790 to 1860 (London 1987), no. 321. Soane bought six paintings by Luigi Mayer at the sale of Sir Robert Ainslie's effects at Christie's on 10 March 1809, one of which, 'Ancient Temples at Agrigentum', appears as pl. [27] in the present work.
