Anonymous; by Francesco Milizia. First edition Venice 1781; enlarged edition, Genoa, 1786. First published under the author's name in Opuscoli diversi risguardanti le belle arti, Bologna 1826. The dedication to Federigo Foscari signed P. P. (i.e. the publisher, Pietro qm. Giovanni Battista Pasquali?). This work, which established Milizia's reputation as a sharp critic, departs from the traditional descriptive character of art criticism and introduces new aesthetic criteria derived from Mengs and Sulzer. (See article on Milizia by W. Oechslin in Macmillan encyclopedia of architects, London 1982).
