This outspoken attack on baroque abuses, especially in the architecture of Michelangelo and Borromini, is Milizia's main polemical work expanding upon the ideas put forth in his Dell'arte di vedere nelle belle arti del disegno secondo i principi di Sulzer e Mengs, 1781, which Soane owned in the 1796 edition (q.v.). Imprint name from licence leaf (p. 210).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front paste-down endpaper J Woods, probably the architect Joseph Woods (1776--1864) who also owned the Soane Museum copy of Milizia's Dizionario, 1797 (q.v.) with which this volume is uniformly bound.

Binding C19th 'Spanish' calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt triple-rule spine, red and olive spine labels. Uniform with the copy of the author's Dizionario, 1797.
