An English woman = Anna, wife of Sir John Riggs-Miller (Ingamells pp. 660-61). First published in 1776. Soane evidently made the acquaintance of the author, possibly through George Dance, before he departed for Italy in March 1778 taking a copy of this book with him. Among Soane's losses when the bottom of his trunk shook loose along the roads of Switzerland during his return to England from his grand tour in 1780 were drawings he had prepared in hopes of producing an illustrated edition; Lady Miller and Soane became regular correspondents. See D. Stroud, Sir John Soane architect (London 1984), pp. 29, 35, 45--6, 47 n.3; G. Darley, John Soane: an accidental Romantic (London 1999), pp. 26, 55, 57. ESTC t89036.
