Are these things so? The previous question from an Englishman in his grotto, to a great man at court.

'An Englishman in his grotto' = the Rev. James Miller, rector of Upcern, Dorset. The 'great man' is Sir Robert Walpole. This metrical lampoon, published by Cooper on 23 October 1740, was the opening salvo in a pamphlet campaign against Walpole over the Second Pardo Convention of 1739. The Soane copy has the pagination of pp. 5--8 in parentheses, and two small head-pieces on p. [1]. ESTC n29634; Foxon M236.

Copy Notes Bound first in a collection of satirical pamphlets, chiefly in verse, including several answers and rejoinders to the present work. The front pastedown is inscribed in ink H Lushington 1766. Formerly folded.

Binding C18th quarter pigskin (?), marbled-paper boards, red morocco spine-label gilt-lettered 'Miscellaneous Poems'. Numbered '62' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
