Title from engraved title-plates. With plates dated as published 'May 1. 1798' and 'Novr. 1. 1798' and dedication dated 'Winchester, April 6, 1798.' Includes 'East View of the King's House ... as Intended to have been finished by Sir Christopher Wren' (Vol. I, facing p. 433). A second revised and augmented edition appeared in 1809. Milner here first expresses some of his ideas on the origins of Gothic architecture, more fully addressed in A treatise on the ecclesiastical architecture of England, 1811 (q.v.). See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 2146 (2nd ed., 1809). ESTC t65099.

Binding Early C19th mottled calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spine, black morocco spine-label. Bound two volumes in one by J. Wingrave for 7s., 31 August 1804. (Archive 7/3/56; entry in Spiers Box. Misc. Booksellers dated 15 September 1804).
