The frontispiece, drawn and etched by John Carter, is a view of the monument of Bishop Poore as it appeared in 1781, before the controversial alterations by James Wyatt to which Milner took objection and which occasioned this Dissertation. A second edition with two new frontispiece plates was published in 1811 (q.v.). Final leaf is publisher's advertisement. ESTC t64668.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title. Soane bought one edition of the book from Josiah Taylor for 11s. 6d. on 10 May 1811 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.2.12) and the other for £1 13s. at Christie's on 17 February 1815, lot 56 (see marked-up sale catalogue in Christie's archive). Bound in a volume with six other pamphlets on architectural subjects.

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, black spine-label gilt-lettered 'Mausoleum At Castle Howard &c &c', numbered '44' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
