MONNAIE DES MÉDAILLES (Paris)
Monnaie des médailles. Collection des médailles en [ ] des campagnes et du règne de l'Empereur Napoléon.
London (Place), printed by C. Roworth,, [1816?].
[8] p. ; 21.0 cm. (8°)

Drop-head title. The final page is blank apart from the printer's imprint. The Soane copy is printed on paper dated in the watermark '1815'. This chronological list of the campaign and commemorative medals struck in France during the Napoleonic era (1796--1815) is a letterpress version of the official engraved order form issued by the Paris Monnaie in 1815 for prospective purchasers to indicate their requirements. However the most recent medals on offer are dated 1816 and this version of the form was probably issued by one of the major London importers of sets of the Napoleonic medals, such as H.R. Young at 46 Holborn or James Mudie at 158 The Strand. Newly added to the London-printed version is a single-page list of 'Médallions par Andrieu, Graveur, À Paris'. For full details of the background to the strong English demand for Napoleonic medals at the end of the war, and the intriguing possibility that Baron Vivant Denon, the ex-Director of Napoleon's Medal Cabinet at the Paris Monnaie, oversaw the completion of the series in France for James Mudie in England, see Antony Griffiths, 'The end of Napoleon's Histoire Médallique', The Medal, no. 18 (1991), pp. 35--49.

Soane acquired his set of the Napoleon medals - an absolutely standard set, whose provenance from Empress Josephine suggested in Soane's 1830 Description is highly implausible, in March 1822 from the Evans sale of the effects of his friend James Perry. The likeliest hypothesis is that it was issued between late spring and August 1815, perhaps to Perry or to an English importer, together with the present list.

Copy Notes With faint pencil markings on p. [1] and four other brief annotations in ink, possibly in Soane's hand. Tipped in at the rear is a 4to-size single-sheet of manuscript listing by their French titles thirteen medals as Manquent [i.e. missing] and recording the total number of medals En tout as 140; to judge from the handwriting and the peculiar choice of items the writer thought had been omitted, this note would appear to have been added at a later date by a French visitor to Soane after inspecting his collection. A later curatorial hand has noted in pencil the number of medals contained in [Cases] '101' and '102' of Soane's collection.

Binding Stitched into blank endpapers within later cream wrappers watermarked 'J Whatman / Turkey Mill / 1828', the upper wrapper of which is inscribed in ink Catalogue of the / Napoleon Medals.

Reference Number 2811

Additional Names Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1769--1821) - Medals
