Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was a traveller, poet, essayist and prolific letter writer chiefly remembered for the letters she wrote as the wife of the British ambassador to Turkey between 1716 and 1718. These were eventually published posthumously in 1763, with two further editions appearing in London in the same year (and two in Dublin). Preface signed: M. A., i.e. Mary Astell, a celebrated theological controversialist and feminist of the 18th century and a friend of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. ESTC t66096.

Copy Notes Engraved bookseller's ticket reading "Sold by A. Crawford, Steyne, Brighton" on front paste-down, inscribed in ink below 1747.

Binding C18th mottled calf, gilt double-rule borders, gilt-tooled spine with sunburst in oval cartouches, red spine-label. Uniform with the copy of An additional volume, 1767 (q.v.). Three volumes bound in one.
