MORELLI, Cosimo (1732--1812)
Pianta, e spaccato del nuovo teatro d'Imola architettura del Cavalier Cosimo Morelli dedicato a Sua Eccellenza Marchesa Lilla Cambiaso
In Roma (Place), nella stamperia del Casaletti,, 1780.
[12] p., [16] pl. (on 15 leaves, 1 double page) : [3] engr. illus. ; 43.5 cm. (2°)

Published on the occasion of the completion of the Teatro dei Cavalieri Associati in Imola near Bologna, which was begun in 1777, and accompanied by plates of other Italian theatres for comparison. The theatre, which made Morelli's name as a theatre architect, was destroyed by fire in 1797. Plates [1--2] are printed recto and verso on a single leaf, and pl. [4] is double-page. In some copies plates [1--5] are bound before pp. [8--12]; in others all the plates are bound after the letterpress. The engraved tail-piece on p. [9] is not present in all copies. BAL, Early printed books, no. 2192.

Copy Notes One of Soane's two copies was bought at the Christie sale, 16-17 February 1815, lot 101 for £1 6s. with N.H. Jardin's Plans, coupes et élévations de l'église royale de Fréderic V, a Copenhague, 1765. (q.v.). (See marked-up copy of the sale catalogue in Christie's archive).
Copy 1: This copy is the variant without the engraved tail-piece. Pages [8--12] bound in the middle of sequence of plates. Bound (3) with copies of Carlo Nolli's Dell'Arco Trajano in Benevento, 1770 (q.v.); Lorenzo Capponi, Pianta e spaccato del nuovo teatro di Bologna, 1771 (q.v.); and George Vertue's first suite of engravings of Gibbs's Bibliotheca Radcliffiana, 1737 (q.v.). The volume is inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper Binding 12s-, probably in Soane's hand, suggesting he may have arranged for these works to be bound together.
Copy 2: 42.5 cm. The variant with an engraved tailpiece on p. [9]. Earlier ownership signature in ink (3 lines) scratched out from top left of front pastedown. Pencil annotation 10.6 top right on the front pastedown, and bookseller's code x/f in pencil on the rear pastedown.

Binding Copy 1: C19th half sprinkled calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine, red leather spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Trajan's Arch / Italian Theatres'.
Copy 2: C18th(?) full buff paper boards, ink spine-title 'C. Morelli'.
