Most probably in part a translation or adaptation of Caylus’s and Majault’s Mémoire sur la peinture à l’encaustique et sur la peinture à la cire, published in Geneva in 1755. With the plate opposite page 58 captioned 'pag.58'; another issue (q.v.) has the caption reading 'facing Page 58'. Page 19 is misnumbered 91. ESTC t147290.

Copy Notes An engraved portrait of Count Caylus is pasted down on the verso of the half-title. This is the copy of 'Muntz on Encaustic Painting head' bought for 3s. 6d. from Thomas Boone on 10 May 1815. (Spiers Box). The half-title is inscribed in ink John Soane, and the front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil by Boone Scarce/ Head in Addition/ =3=6, followed by a note on preparing paper with a wax coat, referring to pages 7 and 71. The rear free-endpaper is inscribed in pencil with page numbers and a note of Mr Sandys Colour Merchant in/ Derby [Dirty] (?) lane long acre.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label.
